Introduction of Smartphones (iPhone & Android) increase the volume and complexity of traffic on a network. These devices are constantly syncing email, contacts and calendar information to the cloud, are an increasing burden on wireless networks. In fact, such a device may generate up to eight times as much load as a laptop with a data card (even when delivering the same amount of data).

To understand and identify the impact of the introduction of SmartPhones, Tektronix Communications recommends the monitoring of the impact on the core network. Identifying, isolating and performing root cause analysis from the service level are keys to successful, effective introduction and operation of these devices. The ability to pinpoint the source of network congestion quickly across the different parts of the network and to accelerate resolution is critical to the operators.
